Little's Blast Not Enough as St. Joe’s Falls Short in Thriller Against Easthampton Savings Bank

The hits were there, the heart was there, and the late-game drama was textbook Tri-County League baseball. But when the dust settled on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon at Westfield State University, St. Joe’s Baseball Club walked away with nothing more than a one-run heartbreaker, falling 8–7 to Easthampton Savings Bank despite outhitting them 13 to 9.

Aaron Little gave the crowd a jolt of hope in the top of the seventh with a towering three-run homer to right, capping a furious rally that brought St. Joe’s within a run. It was his third hit of the day—part of a 3-for-4 performance that also included a pair of singles in the fourth and sixth innings. Joey DiMichele matched him stroke for stroke, adding three hits of his own, including a key RBI single in the seventh that ignited the comeback attempt.

But for all the offensive firepower, the fifth inning proved fatal for St. Joe’s. Leading 3–1, Easthampton Savings Bank erupted for five runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-run double from Florek and a two-RBI single by Moltenbrey. Add in a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and it was a crooked number St. Joe’s couldn’t quite erase.

Pitching was a tale of two halves. Colby Harrington got the nod for St. Joe’s and struck out four over 2.2 innings, but control issues led to five walks and three runs (just one earned). Jake Petrin took the loss after surrendering five runs over 2.1 innings. On the other side, Wagner was solid in two scoreless innings to start the game for Easthampton, earning the win with two strikeouts and no walks.

Offensively, St. Joe’s was aggressive on the bases, swiping eight bags—including multiple thefts by DiMichele, Jack Feltovic, and Nate Carillon—and turning a slick double play in the field. Harrington helped his own cause at the plate with two hits.

For Easthampton Savings Bank, Florek stood tall, driving in three runs and collecting two hits. Lapoint and Cloutier also chipped in with two-hit days, and the lineup showed discipline with seven walks—two each from Wagner and Genovese. Defensively, Easthampton was flawless, committing no errors and getting seven clean plays from Genovese.

Petrin Shines, St. Joe’s Bounces Back to Split Doubleheader with 4–1 Win Over Easthampton Savings Bank

With their pride on the line and Game 1’s one-run heartbreak still fresh, St. Joe’s Baseball Club came back with purpose in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, riding the left arm of Jackson Petrin to a 4–1 victory over Easthampton Savings Bank at Westfield State University.

The story of Game 2 was redemption, control, and just enough timely hitting. After falling behind early on a first-inning sacrifice fly from Easthampton’s Toth, St. Joe’s quickly answered. Bobby Trigilio lined a single to right in the second inning to even the score at one, and from there, Petrin took the wheel. The southpaw threw 6.2 gritty innings, allowing just two hits and one run while walking eight and striking out five. His brother, Jake Petrin, came on in relief to earn the save and preserve the win.

The go-ahead run came on a passed ball in the fourth, one of three runs that slipped past Easthampton’s otherwise sharp starter, Phameuf, who struck out seven and tossed a complete game in the loss. His outing included a highlight-worthy immaculate inning in the first—three strikeouts on nine pitches, a rare feat in any level of baseball.

St. Joe’s leaned on a balanced offensive effort, with Devin Slattery, Trigilio, Jake Petrin, Aaron Little, and Nate Carillon each collecting a hit. Trigilio, Petrin, and Carillon also chipped in RBIs, and the defense held firm, turning a key double play to snuff out any rally hopes from Easthampton.

Moltenbrey and Toth each logged a hit for Easthampton, who showed patience at the plate with eight walks, including a pair from Arooth. But the bats stayed mostly quiet as Petrin worked his way out of multiple jams with poise.

The win gives St. Joe’s a much-needed jolt of momentum heading into another showdown with Easthampton next Saturday, this time on the road. After a hard-fought split, one thing’s clear: this rivalry has plenty of innings left in the tank.
