Saints Build a Nine-Run Lead, Then Survive PeoplesBank's Late Charge, 9–7
Fitzgibbons goes 3-for-4, Harrington drives in three, and Yasu weathers a wild night on the mound as St. Joe's holds on at Bullens Field to close the regular season
It was the kind of win that makes a dugout age in real time. St. Joseph's Saints built a nine-run cushion through four innings, watched PeoplesBank claw back seven of those runs on a parade of walks in the final two frames, and then somehow — mercifully — held on for a 9–7 final at Bullens Field on Thursday to close out the regular season.
The Saints did their damage early and often. The second inning was the turning point — Greg Vouros walked to score one, Devin Slattery walked to score another, Jake Hayes was hit by a pitch to drive in a third, Joey DiMichele singled to plate two more, and Colby Harrington doubled to score a sixth. Six runs, most of them without a ball leaving the infield in any meaningful way. Three more crossed in the fourth — DiMichele drove in two and Vouros added another — and just like that, St. Joe's led 9–0 heading into the fifth and appeared to be cruising.
PeoplesBank had other ideas. Four runs in the sixth — a walk, a walk, a walk, a walk, and a groundout — made it 9–4. Three more in the seventh tightened it further to 9–7, and suddenly Bullens Field was a different place than it had been an hour earlier. But St. Joe's, to their credit, didn't blink. The final out was recorded, the final score stood, and the Saints close the regular season with a win.
Trey Yasu earned the win, going 5⅓ innings and allowing just two hits while striking out four — the modest hit total masking a wild night of six walks that kept PeoplesBank's threat alive throughout. Jackson Hayes came on in relief and got the final five outs, though he too walked five and surrendered three runs over 1⅔ innings. Offensively, Pat Fitzgibbons led the way with a 3-for-4 afternoon, Harrington went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Slattery added two hits. DiMichele handled eight chances in the field without an error and the Saints turned two double plays. For PeoplesBank, Jachym took the loss despite the heroic late comeback effort — he allowed nine runs on seven hits over five innings, with his club drawing 11 walks as a team in a losing cause.
